Thumbnails for Windows and Linux

Every project you save carries a picture of its first frame. A small free add-on for Windows or Linux shows it in your file manager, so your .SVGcinema files show their animations instead of a plain icon.

Step by step

  1. Download it

On the website's Downloads page, under Thumbnails, click Download for Windows (Windows 10 and 11, on regular and ARM PCs), or for Linux the .deb package or the .tar.gz with install script. In the editor, ☰ › Help › Thumbnails on your computer… has the same downloads.

  2. Install it on Windows

Run the download, SVGcinema-Thumbnails-Setup.exe. The installer isn't signed, so Windows says the publisher is unknown: choose More info, then Run anyway. It installs for you only, with no administrator rights.

  3. Or install it on Linux

Install the .deb the way you install any package, for example with sudo apt install ./svgcinema-thumbnails.deb. On other Linux systems, unpack the .tar.gz and run ./install.sh in its folder: it asks for your password, because it installs in the system's folders (file managers make thumbnails in a sandbox that only sees those).

  4. See your projects

Open a folder of .SVGcinema files in File Explorer, or in GNOME Files, Nemo, Caja or Thunar: each file shows its first frame, and where no picture shows, as in a list, the SVGcinema icon. On Linux, close the file manager's window and open it again if they don't show at once.

Good to know. The picture is made again each time you save the project. To remove the add-on, use Settings › Apps on Windows; on Linux, remove the svgcinema-thumbnails package, or run ./uninstall.sh from the .tar.gz. There is none for macOS, and KDE's Dolphin uses its own plugins, so it isn't covered.
