TIMING

Onion skin

Onion skin draws faint copies of the selected layers a few moments before (blue) and after (red) the playhead, so you can see where they come from and where they go. The copies are only on the canvas: they are never exported.

Do it in the editor: guided tour5 steps · about 2 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Select the ball

Click the ball on the canvas, or its row in the Layers panel. Onion skin shows the selected layers only.

  2. Turn on Onion skin

Click Onion skin at the right of the timeline's header. Faint copies of the ball appear ahead of it in red: where it will be in the next three tenths of a second. At 0s there is nothing before it.

  3. Move the playhead to 1s

Drag the red playhead along the time ruler to 1s, the top of the hop. The copies follow: blue ones where the ball was, red ones where it is going. Their spacing shows the speed.

  4. Space them out

Click the arrow beside Onion skin for its settings, and type 0.2 in Every. Before and After set how many copies (up to 10), Fade how strong the nearest ones are.

  5. Play it

Press Space. The copies hide while it plays, and come back when you pause.

Good to know. Onion skin is also in View › Onion skin. Whether it is on, and its settings, are remembered in this browser, for every project.
