INTERFACE

Snapping, guides and rulers

Snapping lines things up as you move and draw: to other layers' edges and centres, to path nodes, to guides, to the grid and to whole pixels. Rulers and guides show where things are; the grid gives an even spacing.

Do it in the editor: guided tour5 steps · about 3 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Show the rulers

Click the grid button at the bottom right of the canvas, then Show rulers. Rulers appear along the top and the left of the canvas.

  2. Pull a guide

Drag down from the top ruler onto the canvas and let go at 250: a tag shows where the guide is. Dropping a guide back on a ruler removes it.

  3. Snap the box to it

Drag the box down towards the guide. Close to it, the box's bottom edge jumps onto the guide, and a magenta line shows the match. Hold Ctrl to move without snapping.

  4. Show the grid

Click the grid button again, then Front grid. The grid's size is at the bottom of the same menu.

  5. Snap to the grid

Click the magnet beside it, then Snap to grid. Moving and drawing now snap to the grid lines too; Enable snapping, in the same menu, turns all snapping off and on.

Good to know. The guides are saved with the project; the rulers, grids and snapping settings are remembered in this browser. Keyframes in the timeline have their own switch, Snap keyframes, at the bottom of the magnet's menu.
