Copy, paste and the right-click menu

Copy layers and paste them as often as you like, a little apart or in the same place. Right-click a layer for a menu of what you can do with it: copy and paste, group, masks, align, arrange, flip and more.

Do it in the editor: guided tour6 steps · about 3 minutes · opens a practice scene

Step by step

  1. Copy the fish

Click the fish on the canvas, then press Ctrl C. A message says 1 layer copied: the fish's group, with everything in it. Ctrl X cuts it instead.

  2. Paste it

Press Ctrl V. The copy lands a little right of and below the fish, just above the selected layer, and is selected. Ctrl Shift V pastes in place instead, exactly where the copied layer was.

  3. Move the copy

Drag the new fish to the right, so the two overlap only a little.

  4. Open the right-click menu

Right-click the new fish. The menu has the commands for the selected layers, among them Copy / Paste, Group, Delete, Select same, Animate, masks, Align, Arrange, Hide, Lock, Rotate 90° and Flip. Commands that don't apply are greyed out. Right-click a row in the Layers panel for the same menu.

  5. Flip it

Click Flip horizontal: the copy turns around its origin and swims the other way.

  6. Send it backward

Right-click it again, point at Arrange and click Send backward: the copy goes behind the first fish where they overlap, and below it in the Layers panel. Ctrl [ does the same.

Good to know. Ctrl D duplicates the selected layer in one go (the copy's name ends in “copy”), and Alt-dragging a layer drags a copy of it. With keyframes selected in the timeline, Ctrl C and Ctrl V copy and paste the keyframes instead. The layers you copy stay in this tab; with none copied here, Ctrl V pastes a picture or SVG code copied in another app (Figma's Copy as SVG, for one).
